As a result of Hurricane Dora, numerous wildfires have swept through the islands creating death and destruction. Most impacted are the out-of-control wildfires that swept the coast of Lahaina, Maui. First responders, federal, state, and local disaster assistance agencies responded rapidly. However, as much support as these agencies provide, HPF and organizations like ours have a significant role in further mitigating trauma and loss.
Affected communities tend to lose hope. In the middle of devastation, they see widespread personal loss, destruction of their communities, and no light at the end. As part of a larger community of Native Hawaiian Organizations and helpers, HPF will drive to support affected communities at the point of need in a culturally familiar way and let them know they are not alone.
For now, it’s essential to provide responsive, effective early support; and keep supporting. Thoughtful, meaningful actions and multiple outpouring rejuvenates a sense of community and hope.
To the affected communities, we are so sorry for your loss. We send our thoughts and prayers to you. Know that you are not alone.
